5 Ways to Stay Active in Austin, TX
September 11, 2023
- 5 min read
From Zilker Park to hiking to paddle-boarding, Austin, TX is home to many diverse activities to stay active around the city. However, navigating these options in the Austin heat can bring a bigger challenge to the table to stay healthy this summer. As a new dietitian to Austin (all the way from Philadelphia), getting used to the southern heat is something that requires some creativity, especially trying to add in daily movement that still feels enjoyable! Here are my 5 favorite ways to stay active in the Austin heat.
Fitting in Outdoor Time
When you like to do outdoor activities but can’t face the heat… Take advantage of the early hours of the day!
- Try setting your alarm 20 minutes earlier to take a light stroll outside.
- Prep everything you need for your activity the night before, so it’s ready to go when you wake up – set out your workout fit (we LOVE these shorts for workouts), fill up ice cold water in our favorite reusable bottle and set in the fridge, and have a quick breakfast option ready to go like these oatmeal cups.
- Make sure you prioritize bedtime at an appropriate time to feel energized and ready for activity in the early morning.
Moving Physical Activity Indoors
When mornings just don’t work for you… Escape the Austin heat and move indoors!
- Try picking up a new hobby and tap the night away at Tapestry.
- Check out dancing in the dark if you and mirrors are not the best of friends.
- Sign up for a self-defense class to stay active and learn valuable skills.
Activity That Doesn’t Feel Like You’re Exercising
When you want activity that doesn’t really feel like activity… Try these!
- Try out the newest trend – Cozy Cardio!
- Take your dog to an indoor park or training course.
- Text a friend to join you (or explore it on your own) for indoor mini golf, bowling, roller skating, or an indoor trampoline course!
Low-Impact Activity Ideas
When you need low-impact activity… Aim for these options in your local ATX neighborhood!
- Combine elements of yoga, ballet, and pilates in a Pure Barre class – you can even try your first class free!
- Bask in the adorableness of baby goats while stretching your muscles in a local yoga class.
- Try out something unique like learning how to fly on a trapeze in these aerial arts classes.
Adding in Activity to Busy Days
When you are always on the go but still want to get movement in… Use these tips!
- Need to get back-to-school shopping done? Take an extra lap around the Barton Creek Square Mall while shopping!
- If you are busy with calling for appointments and meetings, walk around while chatting instead of sitting down.
- When you visit for local doctor appointments, opt for the stairs instead of the elevator.
- If you are stuck working behind a desk, try these chair stretches you can do while catching up on emails or suggest a “walking meeting” around your office with your co-worker.
Conclusion
We all know fitting in movement in this weather can be a challenge, but our tips will help you reach your exercise goals and get your body moving even during this time of year. Remember, staying hydrated and healthy this season will keep you feeling your absolute best!
