The Benefits of Working With a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist for Eating Disorders

Partnering with a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist can help support you as you:

Break the Cycle of Dieting and Restriction

We will help you unlearn restrictive food rules and start enjoying your meals. You’ll have opportunities to give yourself unconditional permission to eat different foods, freeing you from the stress and guilt of the chronic dieting cycle.

Navigate Social Situations Involving Food with Confidence

We provide you with real-world tools and coping strategies to handle restaurants, holidays, and family dinners. You can learn to focus on connection and enjoyment rather than the anxiety around the food being served.

Develop a Positive and Respectful Body Image

Using a Health at Every Size® (HAES®) approach, we help you shift the focus from weight to overall well-being. The goal is to learn to respect your body and appreciate everything it does for you.

Receive Evidence-Based Guidance You Can Trust

Your personalized plan will be rooted in proven scientific research from a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. This provides a safe, reliable, and effective alternative to the dangerous misinformation and fads found online.

When to Seek Help From a Specialist

Recognizing your own behaviors and seeking assistance is a challenging but necessary first step to healing. Consider asking a dietitian for more information if you are experiencing any of these signs:

  • Constant thoughts about food, weight, or body image that cause distress
  • Feeling out of control around food, such as binge eating
  • Restricting food groups or calories
  • Engaging in compensatory behaviors after eating, like purging or over-exercising
  • Avoiding social situations due to food-related anxiety

Our Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating Solutions

Doherty Nutrition can address a wide scope of eating disorders and disordered eating patterns, personalizing nutrition plans to help you meet your goals. Some of the primary conditions we treat include:

We provide nutritional guidance to help clients overcome severe food restriction and intense fear of weight gain, working with them to safely restore weight and normalize eating patterns.

We focus on addressing the underlying causes of bingeing episodes, helping clients find freedom from food-related guilt and develop sustainable, peaceful eating habits.

If you struggle with food guilt, chronic dieting, or body image concerns without a formal diagnosis, our dietitians can help you find a more peaceful, balanced approach.

Our dietitians support clients in breaking the harmful binge-purge cycle, developing strategies to manage triggers and build a healthier relationship with food and their body.

Our team works with clients to decrease fear and anxiety around food, gradually expanding the variety of foods they eat to ensure nutritional adequacy.

We can also help with unspecified or less known eating disorders, such as diabulimia, orthorexia, relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S), pica, disordered eating, compulsive exercising, and rumination disorder.

A Personalized, Science-Backed Path to Recovery

We understand that everyone’s experience with food can look different. Whether you’re struggling with body image, a relationship with food, or other food-related issues, we will tailor your recovery to meet you where you are.

Your First Steps: What to Expect

Before we start making a nutrition plan, we will schedule an initial consultation to provide a safe, non-judgmental space to share your story. This time will be spent getting to know you, hearing your goals for nutritional therapy, and discussing any medical history you have. The information we gather during this meeting provides a foundation for building a personalized roadmap.

Our Approach to Nutritional Healing

Doherty Nutrition’s primary goals for our eating disorder nutrition services are to help you renew your relationship with food and begin properly fueling your body. We value collaborative care, prioritizing open communication with existing treatment teams, involving family when appropriate, and keeping things private when needed.

Together, we will work through:

  • Developing sustainable meal plans.
  • Discovering and incorporating foods you love.
  • Implementing effective coping mechanisms around food.
  • Staying encouraged with meal support sessions.
  • Finding peace with your body.

We Accept Insurance to Make Care Accessible

We are in-network with several major insurance providers, such as Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Humana. Our team can handle insurance benefits navigation for you. We do the legwork up front, so you know exactly what your plan covers before you even schedule your first session.

Because nutrition counseling is often considered necessary for eating disorder recovery, some insurance plans can cover our services at a high rate. For many of our clients, this results in little to no out-of-pocket cost. You may find your visits are completely covered or that you’re only responsible for a small, standard copay.
